.. _20250215_2_6_5_release: Release Notes (v2.6.5) ====================== `February 15, 2025` The v2.6.5 release includes new installation hardening feature. - New ``HYPERSHELL_PYTHONPATH`` environment variable. ----- Features -------- | New ``HYPERSHELL_PYTHONPATH`` environment variable ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The HyperShell application is built on Python and as such is amenable to the standard ``PYTHONPATH`` environment variable. Further, depending on how you install the package it might also be exposed to the user's local `site-packages` directory. This is an issue in both directions. It is very well possible (likely even) that the very tasks the user wants to run are themselves Python programs or scripts. It is therefore problematic to install HyperShell in such a way as to rely on the ``PYTHONPATH`` as that would interfere with the user program. Similarly, we do not want the user to expose HyperShell to other Python package sites that might contain conflicting packages (e.g., alternative releases of ``tomli`` or ``sqlalchemy``). The ``HYPERSHELL_PYTHONPATH`` environment variable acts in much the same way as the standard ``PYTHONPATH`` in that it accepts a listing of paths. However it also accepts a file name which should contain the listing of paths with one path per line, for which the paths are not *appended* to the ``sys.path`` but takes its place entirely as a frozen set. This allows both for an installation to be split across multiple prefixes as well as hardening the installation from being broken by things like the user's current working directory, local `site-packages`, or other coincidental additions.
